Description

New High-Resolution Lens Design

The GR III incorporates the new GR 18.3mm F2.8 lens, which combines exceptional imaging performance with a sleek design. Its extremely thin optical components consist of 6 elements in 4 groups, while maintaining the 28mm (in 35mm format) angle of view and the maximum aperture of F2.8 of its predecessor. The optimal placement of the high-refractive index and low-dispersion glass element and a molded glass element allow for the production of images with the highest clarity and sharpness in the history of the GR camera, while minimizing chromatic aberrations and distortions to the minimum. Additionally, they minimize the production of flare and ghost images in backlit shots. To produce clear images with high contrast in a variety of subjects and in various photographic conditions, the camera comes equipped with macro shooting capability with a minimum focusing distance of 6 centimeters and incorporates an ND (Neutral Density) filter that opens the aperture by 2 stops. The 9-blade aperture creates a natural bokeh (defocus) effect and a true sense of depth at wide apertures, while capturing beautiful rays of light even at almost closed apertures.

High-Resolution and Quality Images

The GR III incorporates a large APS-C CMOS image sensor with an anti-aliasing (AA) filter simulator to enhance image resolution, as well as the new imaging engine, GR ENGINE 6. With approximately 24.24 effective megapixels, this image sensor ensures images with exceptionally high resolution and rich gradations. The sensor is also compatible with multi-tone image recording in 14-bit RAW format. Additionally, the camera features an accelerator designed to improve the image data provided by the image sensor and provide a top sensitivity of ISO 102400 in situations that require extremely high sensitivity.

Hybrid Autofocus System for Fast AF Operation

The GR III features a hybrid autofocus system that combines a contrast AF mechanism, which excels in focusing accuracy, with a phase detection mechanism that ensures fast autofocus operation. Thanks to the two mechanisms, the camera offers autofocus performance that responds better and faster.

Original SR Mechanism

Four-step shake reduction in 3 axes: Thanks to the original design of the SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, the GR III effectively compensates for camera movement when the shutter is released. The 3-axis mechanism compensates for the effects of pitch, yaw, and roll camera movements up to four shutter steps.

Original AA filter simulator: By applying microscopic vibrations with "sub-pixel" accuracy to the image sensor during exposure, the AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter. This innovative simulator allows the user not only to enable or disable the AA filter effect, but also to select the level that best matches the subject. This function is available for shutter speeds less than 1/1000 sec.

Image Control Function for Producing Optical Effects

The new GR III Image Control function provides control over a new type of finishing, which incorporates effect modes into the conventional image adjustment function. Using 10 basic Image Control modes*, users can easily adjust various parameters such as saturation, hue, and contrast to the desired level to achieve their preferred finishing. A set of customizable settings can be added as a custom setting in the Image Control function.

Dual Wireless Communication Bluetooth and LAN

The GR III provides LAN wireless functions for easy connection with other portable devices such as smartphones and tablets. By installing the dedicated Image Sync* application on a portable device, users can view Live-View images on the device's screen, release the shutter, and send various commands to the camera. The wireless LAN connection makes it easy to transfer shots to SNS websites. The camera also features Bluetooth technology to facilitate camera operation. With this, by selecting "Shooting Mode" from the application, the camera can be activated and establish a LAN connection even when it is in "Sleep Mode". By connecting the camera to the Sync app, location data collected can be recorded on the photos.

This review is about a variation of the product

I was thinking about getting it for about a year, and then I regretted not buying it earlier. The camera is very convenient in terms of size, it fits comfortably even with the GC-9 leather case (a must-buy if you can't find it in a bundle) in a pants pocket, it starts up very quickly, and the lens is the best you can get for the money, very sharp. The price of the camera is high, but its quality is proportional.

By watching reviews on YT, one can conclude that the AF is not good/fast - but in real usage conditions, it's just fine. The few times it may not lock if you're targeting something with low contrast, there is the quick and reliable solution of the full press snap: You activate the setting along with the AF, and whenever you press the shutter button directly, it takes a photo with the focus in the predetermined zone.

The aperture of 2.8, although not so wide on paper, in real low light conditions, combined with the performance at high ISO and with IBIS, is...

The positive film color profile produces amazing colors, no need for any post-processing on the photos. The B&W color profiles are also very good.

The only drawback: small battery, it takes around 200 shots or about 2 hours of continuous use. Always need a second one in your pocket.

The street edition is worth its money, it comes with a second battery and the leather case, and the paint job is something else.

It loses a star because its screen is not adjustable and it does not have a flash.
Otherwise, the camera is excellent, lightweight, and the image quality is very high.
The lack of zoom may be off-putting at first, but fortunately, you can crop.

If you are tired of carrying the DSLR and want something more affordable than a Leica, the lightest hi-end camera with a CMOS sensor, the only negative is the battery but it charges very quickly and from a charger
