Description

The attempt of a smooth transition, from Byzantine Hellenism to modern Greek, the first Greek "Renaissance", which I briefly described in "1204", will be crushed under the coordinated pressure of the East and the West. Modern Hellenism will live for seven centuries - from 1204 to 1922 - enslaved, entirely or partially, in Turkish East or Frankish-Latin West. The formation of our nation will thus be transformed into a composition in slavery: Submission and resistance, oblivion and memory, collaboration and rupture, between the elites and the common body.
However, during the period 1700 - 1922, Hellenism experiences a new Renaissance. The second volume of the Formation of modern Hellenism, "The dynamics of rebirth", traverses the economic, social, political, and ecclesiastical history of the Greek world, from the Fall to the Revolution. A dynamic that will culminate with the attempts of synthesis, the "Pedemontio" of the Ionian Islands, the "wild abnormality" of Samos, the Friendly Society, as a prelude to '21. Dionysios the Philosopher and Lambros Katsoneas, Velestinlis and Loukaris, Phanariots and secret school, Daskalogiannis and Ypsilantis, Kolokotronis and Kapodistrias, a mosaic and a source of fruitful debate that will shape our character, multifaceted and... incomplete.
The third volume, "Enlightenment", will examine the intellectual phenomena and ideological contradictions: the enlightenment of the "race", from Kosmas Aitolos to Benjamin of Lesbos; poetry, from folk songs to Solomos; philosophy, from Korydalleas and Voulgaris to Moisiadis and Logios Hermes; linguistic contradictions between Doukas and Katarzis; ideological confrontations between Parios and Korais; the revolutionary ideology with the Greek Nomarchy.
The fourth volume, the "Great Idea" - that is, the national liberation period, which lasts from 1821 to 1922 - focuses on the attempts for the constitutional reconstruction of the "historical space" of late Byzantine Hellenism, as a necessary precondition for the completion of the Renaissance, in its multiple dimensions: economic, social, political-military, spiritual.
