The Beggar is a stunning character study written with mastery by our great poet and prose writer, Andreas Karkavitsas. An excellent psychologist, he realistically and lyrically portrays the passions, prejudices, illiteracy, and superstitions that dominated that era due to the harsh struggle for survival and were the dominant element in the Greek countryside. The central character, Tziritokostas, is the representative type of the cunning beggar who manipulates the psychology of the villagers to get what he wants, culminating in the fact that he managed to deceive even his own father.
