"Hamlet" is the work par excellence inhabited by shadows of the unknown, whether Shakespeare wrote it to console someone dear and unconfessed or not. Nevertheless, as much as we see in Hamlet a work of mourning, one of the most moving and anxious in literature, we will never be able to penetrate "the heart of the mystery" of Shakespeare. It is not necessary, after all. The spectrum of our emotions for everything that is deeper than tears will always be enriched by this deeply structured opacity of the Shakespearean hero. He will win the most difficult battle of expression and die the most difficult death. "The rest is silence." Our right to this silence, the silence of a deeper understanding of ourselves and others, was conquered by Hamlet on behalf of all of us.
