Description

In this book, Yanis Varoufakis analyzes, in the form of a long letter to his father, how capitalism was murdered by something much worse that took its place. Capitalism was killed by capital itself! Not traditional capital (industrial machines, computers, etc.), but a mutation of capital: machines networked through the "cloud" (a kind of "cloud-capital") running algorithms designed to shape and immediately satisfy our consumer desires, thus bypassing the two pillars of capitalism: Market and Profit.

By entering websites like Amazon, etc., we exit markets and enter trading platforms that resemble digital fiefdoms (or cloud-fiefdoms) whose owners, the new ruling class, charge producers enormous rents to give them access to us. As for us, with every click and everything we "upload," we offer them free labor, like serfs under feudalism. And we offer it enthusiastically! This is not capitalism.

Welcome to techno-feudalism! We experience the impact of techno-feudalism everywhere.

  • It is the tombstone of both social democracy and liberalism.
  • It magnifies the economic crisis.
  • It makes it impossible to tackle the climate crisis.
  • It fuels the New Cold War between the USA and China.

Borrowing from the poetry of Hesiod and Homer, as well as from Hollywood's Batman or the Mad Men, Varoufakis analyzes how cloud-capital managed to enslave our minds and elevate its exploitative power domestically and internationally, but also how we can liberate ourselves from its techno-feudalism.
