PERFORMANCE

Caffeine can help mobilize fat stores, allowing the body to use fat as the primary fuel source. By delaying muscle glycogen depletion, exercise can be prolonged, allowing the athlete to perform more repetitions before fatigue. Glycogen sparing is most important in the first 15 minutes of exercise.

RECOVERY

Caffeine can also help enhance recovery after exercise. Four hours after exercise, muscle glycogen increased by 66 percent with the ingestion of a carbohydrate drink containing caffeine compared to the carbohydrate-only drink. This type of muscle glycogen increase can help speed up recovery.

SIDE EFFECTS

Each individual may respond differently to caffeine. It can have many side effects such as poor sleep quality, gastrointestinal discomfort, and anxiety. Caffeine can also have a diuretic effect, increasing blood flow to the kidneys.

IS IT LEGAL IN ATHLETIC COMPETITION USE?

Based on information provided by the IOC, athletes are allowed up to 12 ug of caffeine per milliliter of urine before it is considered illegal.
