Description

The dragon tree is an impressive tree-like plant with relatively slow growth that can reach a height of 1 to 2 meters.

It originates from tropical countries in Africa and is particularly popular in living rooms and professional spaces, as it has the ability to survive even in areas with low light.

What conditions does the dragon tree need indoors?

The dragon tree is a plant that does not have specific requirements. It thrives in bright areas that are not directly exposed to sunlight, especially during the summer period. It is resilient and can survive in spaces with less light.

We can also place it on our balcony, as long as we place it in a shady position, taking care to protect it from the low night temperatures of winter by moving it indoors. Suitable temperatures for the dragon tree to grow are between 16-25°C. It is good to keep the dragon tree away from heat sources, such as a fireplace and radiator, as well as from the cold drafts of air conditioners during the summer period.

What watering and fertilization needs does the dragon tree have?

The dragon tree needs watering approximately every 10 days, while during the hot summer period, we water it every 5 days. Before watering the dragon tree, we check that its soil has dried. If we do not water it sufficiently, we will notice dryness at the edges of the leaves, indicating that our plant needs more water.

If the leaves of the dragon tree turn yellow, it means that it is receiving excessive watering. To help the dragon tree grow, we add liquid fertilizer for green plants 1-2 times a month during the spring and autumn periods, while supplementary iron fertilization will help in the intense greening of the foliage.

What other care does the dragon tree need?

The dragon tree needs to be repotted in a larger pot approximately every 2 years when the roots become overcrowded in the pot. Repotting is best done in spring or early autumn using special indoor plant soil with plenty of perlite and pumice to ensure good drainage.

Regarding the treatment of the false scale insect and the mealybug that affect the dragon tree, preventive spraying with a solution of grated soap or natural pyrethrin every 2 weeks is very helpful.

How is the dragon tree pruned and propagated?

We prune the dragon tree during the spring or autumn period to control its height and shape it. The multiplication of the dragon tree is easily done by the method of grafting, cutting shoots of 10-15 centimeters in length from the top and base of the shoot, in the early spring. We plant the dragon tree grafts in pots with fluffy soil in a cool, moist environment and a temperature of about 20°C. After 2-3 months, when the grafts develop roots, we transplant them into larger pots. And a secret about the dragon tree: The dragon tree is considered one of the plants that purify the air in the home and office by absorbing toxic substances and creating a healthier environment for us to breathe
