Description

Greek history from 1821 until today is a series of tragedies with psychodramas, successes with failures. The Catastrophe of 1922 was certainly a tragedy for its protagonists. For mainland Greece, which welcomed them, the refugees were a gift of ethnic unity, especially in Macedonia and Thrace.

In 1922, a wave of refugees came from Asia, from the coasts and Pontus. These refugees, having developed in a multinational environment, cultivated their Greek elements so that when they arrived in Greece, they contributed to its ethnic unity in an era when multinational states, at least in Greece and Turkey, had ended.

The book 22 Questions and Answers about '22 is an attempt to simplify a complex historical phenomenon, which combines political, social, economic, and military parameters. The arrival of 1,300,000 refugees (not only Greeks) in a country with a population of only 5,450,000 was the biggest integration problem in all of modern European history.
