Love Illegal was written in the early 20th century and takes place in Dafnila, Corfu, with the central characters being members of the rural Therianos family. Everything starts when Stathis Therianos suggests to his wife, Diamanto, that they marry their son, Giorgos, to Chrysaugi, the daughter of the Aspreas family. Despite Diamanto's reservations, the marriage is successful. However, on the day that the two families meet at the Aspreas' house for the "introductions," the deeper motives behind Stathis' intentions are revealed. A spark ignites within him, his desire for Chrysaugi - a hidden love that will evolve into an extreme passion.
Konstantinos Theotokis wrote this extensive narrative in 1906, but it remained unpublished until 1977 when it was restored and published under the editorship of Philippos Vlachos. The new edition, now supplemented with the author's biography, once again highlights a text that is staggering, a work of unwavering dramatic intensity, an intricate anatomy of human passions.
