Description

Ancient Greek poetry and mythology have delivered to us Love, the most beautiful among immortal gods and all-powerful. In real life, however, despite the religion of love having the largest and most enthusiastic flock, there are many obstacles. Wars between nations, stereotypical representations that each people have of others, secular and religious authority, entrenched prejudices, can hurt the wings of Love. They can prevent it from surpassing barriers and gaps. This volume explores the romantic relationships of Greeks, as they are depicted in folk songs, with people of different ethnicities, languages, and religions, namely with black people, Vlachs, Arvanites, and Turks. The differences between Greeks and other peoples or ethnic groups, as well as their dense forced connections, have created relationships that cover the whole range - from the hedonism of exploitative power to authentic desire. Folk poetry, unbiased and impartial, leaves no version unsung. The exploration extends to other forms of popular discourse: proverbs, traditions, fairy tales, songs, curses, insults. The folk songs of other peoples are also taken into account. Furthermore, the attitude of secular and religious authority towards the possibility of mixed marriages is examined. For national ideology, which attempts to homogenize perceptions and attitudes, difference loses its naturalness, is understood as a danger and threat, and often becomes a shame, a sin. In the modern Greek nation-state, as well as in most European nation-states formed in the 19th century, the collective imagination represented the other burdened with various negative characteristics in order to facilitate its devaluation. Greek folk songs have never been interested in limiting or concealing the variety of real life, where love is likely to manifest itself regardless of the implicit or explicit rules of nationally and religiously acceptable behavior. Its frankness shows that it has the will and ability to escape from pedestrian discourse, which seems monotonous compared to polyphonic singing. In the twin volume 4B' of the series "I take up writing to write...", which will be released in 2022, the romantic relationships of Greek women and men with Gypsies, Bulgarians, Jews, and Franks are explored.
