Description

In 1860, Theodoros Falez Kolokotronis, grandson of his namesake, the Chief General of the Greek Revolution, in his book "Ἱερεῖς τῶν Ἐλευσινίων" and specifically in the part where he dedicates his work to Nikolaos Skoufas and Athanasios Tsakalof, notes: "Blessed be the Lodges, the Masonic ones, which baptized you in the baptismal font of Freedom." Since then, hundreds of studies have been written, sometimes trying to strengthen and sometimes undermine the role of Freemasonry in the life of the new and younger Hellenism.

This study attempts to distance itself from preconceived notions, categorical opinions, and exclusionary positions, and to critically approach the existing literature. Its goal is to shed more light on a largely unexplored aspect of Greek history and to make the need for studying the Masonic phenomenon under exclusively scientific terms evident.

From Constantinople and Smyrna to the islands of the Ionian Sea and the vineyards of Thessaly, this book aspires to unravel the thread of events from the beginning and, by reexamining the sources, to narrate the course of one of the most important brotherhoods in Greek history.
