Description

In the 1958 elections, EDΑ caused a big surprise, occupying the position of the official opposition with a percentage of 24.42%. This impressive comeback of the defeated in the Civil War, just nine years after its end, caused panic within the regime. Post-civil war persecutions and terrorism, which until then had been slowly but steadily deescalating, were reignited. Military tribunals were reactivated, unconstitutional laws were taken out of the drawers, Security Forces, the Gendarmerie, and the Special Interrogation Centers were unleashed in the hunt for progressive citizens.

Faced with this new wave of terrorism, which bore the stamp of the Karamanlis government, the Left fought resolutely on many fronts: in Parliament, on the streets, in the courts, in prisons and exile; and even on the level of everyday life, where hundreds of thousands of people faced persecution, violence, intimidation, and social exclusion. This book speaks of this struggle, recounting scenes and episodes of an uncompromising political battle for democracy, social justice, and dignity.
