Description

When the COVID-19 pandemic reached Europe, it became clear early on that its effects would impact all aspects of social life horizontally and vertically. It also became apparent that the mass media would serve as the primary mechanism for informing the public about the course of the pandemic and its management, thus becoming a crucial factor that would influence the development of the pandemic itself. This book examines precisely this, how the mass media contributed to shaping the pandemic not only as a social phenomenon but also as an epidemiological one, through their influence on social behaviors. It documents not only the Greek experience but also the experiences from Cyprus, the UK, France, Sweden, Japan, and Spain. The content of the book emerged from corresponding research that began a few days after the imposition of lockdown measures and the confinement of residents to their homes. Specifically, the book examines: the information conveyed by the media regarding the origin, transmission methods, symptoms, and consequences of the spread of SARS-CoV-2; the information conveyed about state measures as well as individual protection measures and the reactions of scientists, citizens, and collective bodies to these measures; how they covered the effects of the pandemic and its management; how they portrayed the relationship between the state and its citizens in light of the pandemic; how they affected social cohesion, education, and other sectors; and ultimately, what the impact of COVID-19 was on the landscape of the mass media itself.
