Description

This book attempts an approach to the city through the invisible, unpaid, and underestimated work of women. This work, performed as "love, offering, and care," makes the city and its individual areas sustainable and lived-in, where cycles of capital investment and profit realization are recorded, acceptable, albeit often difficult, living conditions are built, ways of coexistence and social cohesion are formed.

The research focuses explicitly on the world of women, without sharing common perceptions of a stable and almost immobile gender identity. On the contrary, through the perspective of space as a field of (co)existence of multiplicity and the focus on Athens (from the Metapolitefsi to the electoral victory of SYRIZA), the changing ideas of what constitutes "women" in different places and times are highlighted, as well as the personal and collective determinations that different women attempt through specific combinations of public and private/personal, movement and stance (or even entrapment), acceptance and rejection of established views and practices, everyday upheavals and collective struggles.

All of the above ultimately lead to complex gender subjectivities, but also shape urbanities, which are explored in specific spatial and temporal contexts: in Perama in the years after the fall of the Dictatorship, in Ilioupoli when the peripheral neighborhoods of Athens are intensively rebuilt, and in Kypseli, as perceived by old and new residents as a multinational neighborhood where, for three decades, neighborhood relationships and coexistence are built in conflicting ways.
