Description

In these selected texts, which range from 1905 to 1938 and remained untranslated until today, the major Freudian principle of psychic conflict is highlighted through the exploration of various forms of psychopathology, as well as the behavior of the individual's ego in relation to both the demands of instincts and external reality. The individual, being perverse/narcissistic by nature and position, in his attempt to integrate into the external world and relinquishing for this purpose the insatiable desire for satisfaction of his desires, will come into conflict with the current reality (the pleasure principle in conflict with the reality principle). In this endeavor, resorting to neurosis or psychosis signifies a pathological way of adaptation. The major element that psychoanalysis brings, in general, regarding the structure and functioning of the psyche, apart from the unconscious process and the psychic conflict of instincts and psychic sites, is that the psyche is not something unified and compact, but is composed of mnemonic traces, representations, and fantasies, in a primarily unconscious form, which needs to be brought to light and then managed by an individual's ego, after first managing to become aware of it, in order to reduce the chances of falling ill. This is also the great challenge posed by psychoanalysis, as analysis and therapy, through the process of bringing the unconscious process to the surface.
