An all-arounder body that goes beyond the basics, the Sony Alpha a7 IV performs double duty with strong photo and video performance. An advanced hybrid mirrorless camera, the a7 IV has the resolution and AF performance that attracts photographers along with powerful 4K 60p video recording for filmmakers and content creators.

The newly developed 33MP Exmor R CMOS sensor pairs with the BIONZ XR processor from the Alpha 1 for fast shooting up to 10 fps and 4K 60p video recording, along with wide sensitivity up to ISO 51200 and a large dynamic range of 15+ stops. Beyond image quality, the sensor and processor also contribute to an advanced AI-based AF system, which supports real-time eye autofocus and real-time tracking for intuitive AF control and subject tracking.

This fourth generation of the a7 camera also features a body design that houses a higher resolution 3.68 m-dot EVF, a vari-angle touchscreen LCD, and dual memory card slots, including a dual CFexpress Type A/SD UHS-II slot. Connectivity and streaming are also key features of this camera, supporting a simple plug-and-play design for live streaming directly from the camera when connected to a computer via USB.

The newly developed full-frame Exmor R 33MP sensor features a back-illuminated design that promotes high clarity, low noise, and vibrant color performance. This design benefits working in low-light conditions and operates in conjunction with a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200. The sensor design also achieves an impressive dynamic range of approximately 15 stops, and files can be recorded in raw format, JPEG, or 10-bit HEIF format.

Using the top-tier BIONZ XR engine, high-speed image processing capabilities are available for fast continuous shooting, 4K video recording, and advanced AF tracking performance. The fast processing also helps reduce rolling shutter and other motion distortions for clear performance of moving subjects.

Regarding shooting speeds, the sensor and processor allow shooting up to 10 fps, using either the mechanical or electronic shutter and with AF/AE enabled. Additionally, the buffer allows recording up to 828 consecutive uncompressed raw + JPEG frames when using a CFexpress Type A card.

Suitable for working with flash when photographing fast-moving subjects, P-TTL flash metering is possible between each exposure when working with continuous shooting modes lo, medium, or even high speed. This helps maintain consistent lighting when shooting in low light and significantly benefits working in changing or low-light conditions. The updated flash control system also helps reduce flash trigger delay, uses the camera's AWB information for natural color rendering, and supports adjusting selected flash units and transmitter directly from the camera interface.

• Fully utilizing the high-resolution 33MP sensor and fast processing capabilities, UHD 4K 30p XAVC HS 10-bit recording is possible using the entire width of the sensor, offering 7K oversampling for impressive clarity and realism.
• There is also 4K oversampling recording, via a 4.6K capture area, with Super 35 crop, offering UHD 4K output up to 60p in 10-bit.
• No recording time limit allows for unlimited shooting time, and the camera's physical design features an improved heat dissipation structure for longer recording durations. More than one hour of continuous 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, for example.
• The a7 IV uses a pair of codecs that suit different workflows: XAVC HS, which uses HEVC/H.265 encoding to retain more detail at smaller bit rates, and XAVC SI, which is an intra-frame codec for consistent performance and quality at bit rates up to 600 Mb/s.

• S-Cinetone can be used to provide distinct colors and healthy skin tone rendering that matches FX9 and FX6 cameras, along with a1 and a7S III cameras, and is based on technology from professional Cinema Line cameras, such as VENICE. This color profile offers natural mid-tones, soft colors, and particularly well-controlled highlights.
• HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support allows recording in a wide color gamut for producing HDR content directly from the camera.
• S-Log3 is also available for producing a dynamic range of 15+ stops with increased grading control in the shadow to mid-tone areas of the image.

Covering approximately 94% of the image area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates 759 phase-detection points for quick and accurate focusing in various lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -4 EV. This focusing system is available for use in all recording modes, benefiting both video and photo applications.

Borrowing from the top-tier autofocus system, the a7 IV has tuned tracking and subject detection capabilities that quickly lock onto subjects and improve focus accuracy on recognized eyes and faces of subjects:

• Real-time Tracking is an AI-based subject recognition system that identifies color, pattern, and subject distance information for high accuracy and focus speed.
• Beyond simple subject tracking, real-time Eye AF fine-tunes focus accuracy and recognizes the eyes of humans, animals, and birds for critical sharpness. Real-time Eye AF even maintains focus on the subject's eye when they leave and re-enter the frame, allowing for work in more spontaneous shooting situations.

• Real-time eye autofocus is fully supported during video recording, for subject detection and eye tracking of humans, animals, and birds during shooting.
• For more control over how focus shifts appear during recording, the seven-step AF transition speeds and five-step AF subject shift sensitivity controls allow you to determine how quickly focus changes from point to point and how smoothly focus transitions occur.
• A unique solution for compensating for the performance of certain lenses during rack focusing, focus breathing compensation will automatically smooth focus transitions and maintain a consistent field of view when changing focus position during a shot. This function slightly crops the image and corrects any changes detected in the composition when focusing occurs.
• Focus map is a unique way of visualizing depth of field and works similarly to peaking with a colorful overlay of the scene indicating which parts of the scene are in front of and behind the focus point depending on the selected aperture.
• A feature carried over from the FX6 digital cinema camera, AF Assist allows you to intuitively switch to manual focus control to adjust the focus position when working with AF. This is a quick way to shift selective focus between different subjects in a scene during recording.

• An improved QVGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF features a 3.68 m-dot resolution, which is approximately 1.6x higher in resolution than its predecessor for sharper and clearer viewing. This viewfinder supports standard frame rates of 60 fps and 120 fps for smooth motion performance, and its physical design has a long 23 mm eyepoint, 0.78x magnification, and a 37.3° field of view.
• Ideal for vlogging or other self-recording needs, the 3.0" 1.03 m-dot side-opening articulating screen can be used in a forward-facing orientation or tilted up or down to suit high or low shooting angles. This LCD screen is also a touchscreen, for intuitive shooting control and menu navigation.

• New to the Alpha line, there is a convenient Still/Movie/S & Q dial, located beneath the shooting mode dial, that allows for quick switching between different recording modes. By toggling between photo and movie recording modes, the menu system and custom buttons will change for more intuitive and practical use.
• The customizable interface allows for the assignment of 169 functions to 18 different buttons and the new rear R dial.
