"Cardiorespiratory arrest in children has different characteristics from that of adults. In adults, the most common cause of non-traumatic cardiac arrest is ischemia and the accompanying arrhythmias. In children, the causes are more heterogeneous and usually involve respiratory function.
In the pediatric population, respiratory arrest is easier to reverse and has better survival rates, which can exceed 50%, as long as there is still cardiac function. Provided that diagnosis and treatment are immediate, neurological damage in these cases is minimal. Of course, the most important intervention in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is prevention. If an arrest occurs, immediate and correct initiation of vital function support is necessary, with the knowledge and application of basic and specialized cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills. It is important, therefore, for both medical personnel and citizens to be properly trained so that they can recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary dysfunction in a timely manner, apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and decide when assistance or transfer to a hospital is needed.
This manual is the only faithful translation and has the approval of the Pediatric Resuscitation Working Group of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) following a signed agreement between the ERC and the ESAN."
