The increase in the frequency of malignant neoplasms has necessitated the more frequent use of cancer markers as the most useful means of monitoring therapy and controlling the recurrence of malignant neoplasms. The evaluation of markers requires a rational process of issuing results. Its basic parameter is the pre-analytical process. The first part of this manual refers to the description of the cancer markers of malignant neoplasms.

Emphasis was placed on the nature, position (organ, tissue) of composition and production, metabolism and half-life, with the rationale that this data facilitates understanding of their use in diagnosis, monitoring, and control of recurrences. At the end of the description of each marker, reference values are mentioned. The second part refers to the variations of cancer markers in various malignant diseases. Their description is addressed to non-specialists, as basic knowledge is described. This manual aims to develop broader and better communication between non-specialists and oncology healthcare professionals. Its relatively small size compared to the importance of the content makes it valuable, user-friendly, and a helpful advisor in the laboratory and for the clinical physician.
