This book attempts to provide a comprehensive systematic description of the Serbian language by offering explanations to Greek students in their native language. The grammatical phenomena are not presented according to thematic units or to a limited extent, i.e., to a level suitable for a specific language proficiency level, but in their entirety because this book is aimed not only at beginners but also at students at an advanced stage of language learning, including knowledge that is not necessary at levels below C1. It can also be used by educators who teach the Serbian language as an auxiliary tool in the classroom.
The goal is to describe the structure of the Serbian language with simple terminology, i.e., as much as is necessary for the explanation of a particular phenomenon, with tables that help in understanding and adopting the rules. Many examples and exercises are included to reinforce the phenomena. Since certain material in this manual comes from the notes I prepared for my students in the tutorial, and since they have helped me understand which points may be more problematic for Greeks learning the Serbian language, I will also refer to differences and similarities between the two languages.
The book is structured so that it is not necessary for the student to follow the sequence of chapters as given, but to have the option to choose which phenomenon they want to practice.
Exercises are given at the end of each chapter, while their solutions are found at the end of the book. Exercises are not included in the chapters that concern phonetic changes, because I believe that for students of Serbian as a second/foreign language, the best way to adopt these complex rules is through their practical application, i.e., by practicing the other grammatical phenomena where phonetic changes appear. Also, in the chapter concerning Future II, few exercises are given since Future II is mainly used in Conditional sentences.
