Description

It is a species endemic to the USA, Mexico, and Nicaragua. It has silvery foliage and as it matures, it multiplies and forms clusters.

It blooms by extending a pink spike from the center of the plant from which purple flowers grow. The base of the plant is flattened and quite bulky while the leaves of the plant are quite thick and grow upwards elliptically.

The surface of the plant is covered with hairs to facilitate the absorption of water and nutrients, which gives it its silvery hue. It is found at an altitude of 900-1200 m.

Care Instructions:

Light: Air plants need indirect, filtered light to be robust and healthy, place them in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight as exposure to it can cause burns to their foliage. They thrive exceptionally well under artificial light, making them suitable for indoor cultivation, mainly for homes and offices.

Water: This is the most important task to keep your air plants. Depending on the environment they are in, their water requirements change. They require watering 1-2 times a week or more frequently if placed in an area with heating or air conditioning. Watering can be done in two ways:

  1. By spraying their foliage with water
  2. By submerging in a basin of water for 15 minutes

In both cases, it is necessary to place them upside down to drain the excess water inside them. Once completely dry, they can be placed back in their position.

Extra tips:

  • Dehydrated plants should be watered by submerging in a basin of water.
  • Plants watered by submersion should be watered less frequently compared to those sprayed with water.
  • Use water at room temperature, ideally deionized or rainwater.

Ventilation: Place your air plants in a spot where air can move and remove moisture between waterings. Ensure they dry within 4 hours of the last watering, especially if their position is inside closed containers or terrariums.

Temperature: The optimal temperature range for growing this plant is 18-25 °C. The temperature should never drop below 12°C.

Humidity: If the humidity in the area where they are grown is low, they benefit from occasional spraying on their foliage.

Fertilization: Air plants are not particularly demanding, but fertilizing once a month is very beneficial as it promotes faster growth, flowering, and multiplication. Use fertilizer suitable for air plants once a month.

Height and growth rate: It is a slow-growing plant and can reach up to 35 cm.

Origin: USA, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
