The railway, a symbol of modernization, globalization of the economy, and the spread of goods and ideas, conquers the Balkans. With the opening of the Thessaloniki-Monastir railway line in 1894, important economic, strategic, and commercial centers of the Balkan hinterland are connected to the port of Thessaloniki. The railway stations of each city, examples of aesthetics and architecture, were living cells of the city and points of social reference for the population. Each station becomes a meeting place: explorers, travelers, agents, military spies, and officials meet on their platforms.
