Subnautica Below Zero started as an Expansion and ended up as a Sequel to the fantastic first game. ...very bad!

The problems start with the story, as this game puts much more emphasis on it. Two years after the events of the first game, the company Altera has set up a permanent base in one of the planet's poles. You control Robin Ayou, a xenobiologist who secretly and illegally lands on the planet while on quarantine to learn about her sister's mysterious death who was working for the company. During production, they lost their screenwriter, and this is evident in the many gaps in the Story. Robin speaks, but she doesn't have anything important to say. Supposedly, the area you are in was inhabited by people who left voluntarily, but what you see tells a different story. Additionally, you encounter characters from the first game who theoretically should not have survived, and overall the story is full of gaps and contradictions.

As if that wasn't enough, the gameplay also took a step back. A large part of the game takes place on land, and the game suffers from it, as it doesn't have good mechanisms for good gameplay. Even worse, the underwater areas are much smaller, more cramped, and more boring. Also, besides the Prawnsuit, the only other submarine vehicle is the Seatruck, which theoretically is more customizable with the ability to attach and change modules, but it is more cumbersome than the Seamoth and less autonomous (and more boring) than the Cyclops from the first game. Considering how cramped the areas are, you will find reasons not to use it. Avoiding the Leviathans is equally terrifying, as later in the game, you feel like you have no choice but to face-tank them whether you are on land or in the sea. At least this time they had the kindness to give you a hint of a map so you don't end up in the abyss exploring. The improvements to the interface fortunately came with a patch in the first game.

The environment also seems to lack the same imagination as the previous one. You have more dull colors, more boring creatures, and more indifferent landscapes. The Leviathans make a lot of noise, but they are smaller and less intimidating, and it seems like they made many new fish models, but the most interesting ones are from the first game.

The whole game is worse than the first. From the story full of holes, to the emphasis on land, to the worst vehicles, the most boring graphics, the game should not be considered a sequel but an expansion or spinoff, and have 1/3 of the price. Play it only if you desperately want more Subnautica.

    Hints for beginners:
    • Play the first game first. Besides being a better game, you will have learned enough about the gameplay to be ready for this one.
    • Scan everything so you can build the item it was before. The nests from the sea monkeys almost always have something interesting.
    • Always carry Beacons to easily find interesting areas again.
    • Grow your own food. Harvesting a plant with a knife (or simply picking it up) gives you seeds to plant and multiply in your base. It is an excellent source of water, food, or materials for recipes.
