The great chemist Sotiris Aristotelous Sofianopoulos was the last owner of the industry "Piraeus Dye Works" (CHROPEI), a nobleman, descendant of an old and historic family, with a significant business history. He was intelligent, educated, multi-talented, and above all, a Greek patriot. A brilliant mind and explosive entrepreneur. His business activity intertwined with his struggle for a productively independent Greece was an "Odyssey," and he fought as a modern "Odysseus" with his beloved company, CHROPEI, as his "ship." From the post-dictatorship period onwards, he dedicated himself to a titanic struggle to prove to Greek society that Greece is a gifted country with an ideal climate, abundant natural wealth (fauna, flora, minerals), and can very well succeed on its own. In a scientific manner and mainly with a multitude of irrefutable arguments regarding the country's productive capabilities and with numbers, he tried to disseminate the knowledge he learned and gathered with great effort.
Sotiris Sofianopoulos, with his investigative spirit and love for Greece, wanted to make this crazy dream a reality. He could have limited himself only to his family's large company, CHROPEI S.A., and shown no other interest apart from the survival of CHROPEI. However, he was not a profiteer. He had concerns for the country; he did not want to passively face the path to degradation and dependence on foreign factors. He could not "digest," for example, how the Netherlands, with an area smaller than two-thirds (⅔) of our Macedonia, can supply the whole of Europe with livestock and dairy products, while our Macedonia cannot achieve this. What he did not discover himself through his personal involvement in numerous productive processes, he drew, with his curiosity and erudition, from earlier "forgotten" Greeks.
