This textbook is primarily aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering Departments and Civil Engineers studying Port Works and Coastal Protection Works. It is also addressed to technical or scientific professionals whose field of knowledge includes the analysis of natural phenomena in the coastal area, such as Oceanographers, Physicists, Geologists, and it is an important aid for Environmental Impact Assessment consultants of Coastal Technical Works. The main purpose of this textbook is to contribute to a deeper understanding of coastal processes (theory, calculations, and mathematical simulation) and to lay the foundations for the design of Port Works and Coastal Protection Works. 

Readers are introduced to the basic principles of Coastal Engineering and gain a comprehensive understanding of wave-related processes in the coastal environment (such as wave propagation, sea currents, sea level variations, interaction of waves with technical structures, sediment transport, and evolution of seabed morphology). By understanding the above and with the help of the simplified as well as advanced mathematical simulation tools presented, it is possible to gain a substantial understanding of the physical processes in the coastal environment, as well as the principles of design of Port Works and Coastal Protection Works.
