Description
Christopher M. Woodhouse was twenty-two years old when World War II broke out. He was enlisted in the Royal Artillery of Britain in October 1939 and reached the rank of colonel by 1944. He arrived in Greece for the first time as an officer of the British Military Mission and participated in the operations that took place until the evacuation of Crete in the spring of 1941. From Crete, he left with his commander, Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Myers, for mainland Greece. On November 25, 1942, together with members of the British Military Mission and men from Aris Velouchiotis and Napoleon Zervas, they blew up the Gorgopotamos Bridge, an action considered one of the most significant resistance acts of World War II.
Woodhouse, as a connoisseur of Greek affairs, had extensive activity in Greece, coming into contact with many of the key players and forming a firsthand opinion on the events and critical incidents that marked the country's history. In 1948, while the civil war was raging, he published his book "The Apple of Discord" in English, which has since become a reference point. Seven decades later, the book remains extremely interesting. From the regime of August 4th, the heroic epic of Albania, the German occupation, the resistance organizations, and the Conference of Lebanon, to the liberation, the December events, and everything that led to the bloody civil war, the author describes in detail the critical events for Greece of a tumultuous decade, the consequences of which we still observe today.
