Although there has been a resurgence of interest in Lacanian psychoanalysis, especially regarding its insights into capitalist ideology—as evidenced by the work of Slavoj Žižek—there are still very few systematic accounts of Marx's role in Lacan's work. The capitalist unconscious, a major and comprehensive study of their connection, repositions Marx within the broader context of Lacan's teaching and emphasizes the ability of psychoanalysis to reaffirm dialectical and materialist thought. Lacan's unorthodox reading of Marx redefined critical concepts such as alienation, jouissance, and the Freudian "theory of the work of the unconscious." By tracing the traces of these theoretical developments, Tomšič argues that psychoanalysis, structuralism, and the critique of political economy participate in the same movement of thought; his book demonstrates with some of its most significant conclusions how to carry out this movement.
