It sounded like a bittersweet joke in the civilized world in March 1821 that the enslaved Greeks rebelled against their powerful Turkish oppressor. Few people could believe at that time that the Sultan's slaves would be able to break free from their bondage after four centuries of slavery. But secretly, the birds say, secretly the nightingales sing "let's drive away all of Turkey or perish together," and yesterday's Greek slave, now aware of his fate, launched his own attack on the sky with his sword, and with his own blood, he opened the path that led to his new, irreversible destiny: freedom or death. From battle to battle, the Greeks, who were erased from the world map until yesterday, the few against the many, managed to turn their unimaginable revolution into a sacred act. The new Greece was reborn amidst the smoke of gunpowder and blood.
