Rowan Williams is a theologian who is very familiar with the Christian tradition as a whole. He handles the patristic literature with incredible ease, especially the discourse of the desert with its simple but profound wisdom. At the same time, his breadth of knowledge allows him to engage with contemporary theology, literature, theater, cinema, and the arts, giving his texts a freshness.
Through the narratives of the four Evangelists, he transports us to the darkest night of human history. That night when people tried to judge God. That is what we do every day in our lives, whenever we believe that God does not respond to our demands, desires, and plans.
