Description

The period of the Metaxas dictatorship is a pivotal point in the history of modern Greece. It is the culmination of social and political turmoil after World War I, as well as the entry point into World War II and the subsequent conflicts among Greeks.

The texts in this volume are written by various scholars, from young to experienced, from Greeks to British and Australians. All of them have dealt with the period of Metaxas, following different paths, both within and outside Greek history. The authors examine and dissect the issues of Greek political, economic, and social history during the period from the fall of parliamentary governance to the beginning of the tripartite occupation, and in some chapters provide new historical information. However, our intention was for this collective volume to offer some new insights into the phenomenon of "Metaxas" and its era. [...]

The texts published in translation in this collection are derived from the book "Aspects of Greece, 1936-40: The Metaxas Dictatorship," ELIAMEP - Vryonis Center, 1993. Any changes are made by the authors themselves.

The texts included are:
- D.H. Close, "The Foundations of the Metaxas Dictatorship" (translated by Michalis Katsimitsis)
- Konstantinos Sarantis, "The Ideology and Political Character of the Metaxas Regime" (translated by Angeliki Polychronopoulou)
- Thanos Veremis, Mark Mazower, "The Greek Economy (1922-1941)"
- Michalis Pikramenos, "The Collapse of Judicial Independence by the Regime of August 4th"
- Alexandros Kitroef, "Greek Farmers: From Dictatorship to Occupation"
- Vangelis Chatzivasileiou, "The Gamble of Literary Modernism"
- Elias Iliopoulos, "The Greek Strategy of Containment against Revisionist Threats - and Its Limits"
- Iakovos D. Michailidis, "The 'New State' and the Slavophone Population"
- Ioannis S. Koliopoulos, "Metaxas and Greece's Foreign Relations (1936-1941)"
- Nikos Papanastasiou, "The Strategy of 'Collaboration' between Greece and Germany (1936-1941)"
