Description

Consumption includes the processes by which individuals create, negotiate, assimilate, or reject cultural conditions. Consuming culture, in simple terms, means shopping, visiting museums, participating in cultural events, traveling, studying, working, watching television, cooking, eating, forming interpersonal relationships, and - why not? - falling in love. The list is extremely long - probably inexhaustible - as it encompasses every process in which an individual is called to engage during their lifetime. However, what is important is that culture becomes understandable only through its composition, and ultimately its consumption, precisely because it encompasses the essence of relationality. Therefore, the discussion of consumption is essentially a cultural discourse, as it reveals cultural codes, boundaries, margins, exclusions, as well as cultural connections and functions. Consuming means consenting, conforming, reacting, resisting, rejecting. Consumption can be understood as an attitude and choice that responds to political, social, economic relationships and dependencies. It constitutes a culturally charged practice and action that mobilizes emotions such as fear, desire, disgust, or joy. In this way, the concept of consumption attempts to engage in dialogue with the multiple interpretations of culture. But above all, it is an attempt to problematize the boundaries and margins of the individual and collective self. Perhaps this is also the great challenge of anthropology.
