Description

The coup d'état of April 21, 1967 found Pavlos Bakoyannis, director of the Greek Program of Bavarian Radio, at Munich airport, ready to travel to Greece for the journalistic coverage of the parliamentary elections that were to take place a month later. Then began a new chapter in life in West Germany, with his militant journalism against the dictatorship of the colonels and their allies inside and outside Greece.

The present book records his broadcasts and analyses of the political backstage of the era, the tortures, persecutions, imprisonments, and sacrifices of the fighters against the junta, as well as the organization of Greeks and foreigners who opposed it. It also sheds light on the clash of principles and interests regarding the Greek issue in West Germany, especially in Bavaria, which often manifested itself through disagreements between those who opposed the junta with democratic and moral arguments and those who advocated a "realistic" cooperation.

Through Bakoyannis' anti-dictatorship journey in Munich, the dynamic that led him to broader political roles after the restoration of democracy is revealed, beyond his role as a respected journalist or a methodical political scientist. Already at that time, his political belief that shaped his actions until his assassination was evident: the overcoming of traditional divisive lines in the name of national unity.
