Description
It is difficult for Zygmunt Bauman to accept the given view that considers culture a simple phenomenon, "something like the cherry on top of the cake", which attacks the "real" core of social life, the "structure". On the contrary, he perceives structure as the foundation of culture, as the consolidation of the products of cultural activity. Of course, this activity, cultural practice, never starts from scratch and is never completely free, as it depends on a given factor, individuals with their natural characteristics.
Thus, culture is always the management of the existing. And yet, the view adopted by Zygmunt Bauman wants reality to be a whole and a product of human action. That is why the question regarding the autonomy of the supposed "cultural" (super)structure is paradoxical. However, the author claims elsewhere: "Autonomous from what? Culture is a form of activity, a way of acting...".
