Description

This book deals with the extremely improbable, the unbelievable unexpected events and explains both why they happen and why they continue to happen again and again. Initially, this seems contradictory. How can events be unbelievably unexpected and yet continue to happen? Undoubtedly, unexpected means rare. Many real-life events prove that it is not a contradiction: people who win the lottery many times, lightning strikes repeatedly the same unlucky person, significant economic crashes that happen again and again, and so on.

How can all these be explained? The universe has laws that describe how it functions. Newton's laws of motion describe how objects fall and why the moon moves in orbit around the Earth. Other laws of nature show us how stars are born and how they die, the origin and perhaps even the destiny of humanity.

The same applies to extreme unexpected events. As the Principle of Improbability, I define a group of laws of possibility that reveal that we should expect the unexpected and why such an attitude towards life is necessary.

The laws that make up the Principle of Improbability arise at various levels. Some of them refer to the fundamental characteristics of the construction of the universe and are as fundamental as the basic, abstract truth that two plus two equals four. Others depend on the deep properties of what we call probability. And other laws manifest even at the level of human psychology: the brain is not a simple recording device. Under the right conditions, any of the laws is sufficient to lead to a version of the Principle. However, its power becomes truly impressive when these laws interact. And then the incomprehensibly unexpected happens.
