Description

The sixteen studies collected in this volume have Cyprus as a common reference point. Written over a decade (1979-1990) and published in newspapers and magazines in Athens, Heraklion, Larnaca, Nicosia, and Sydney, they constitute the effort of a neohellenist to contribute to the study of modern Greek literature from the perspective of the multifaceted Cypriot version: Cyprus as an "other Greece", the discovery of which contributes to the liberation of significant artistic forces of Hellenism as a space of reception and creative assimilation of outstanding works that can be considered milestones of modern Greek literature.

From this perspective, this work presents, on a theoretical level (and rewards in practice), a certain type of study and integration of contemporary Cypriot Greek literature into the body of modern Greek literature. It is an effort based on the principle that the orientation towards the study of Cypriot literature should not be combined with any form of undermining its evaluative approach.

Therefore, it disagrees with the increasing efforts of detachment and isolation and the consequent relaxation of the criteria by which it is studied: with the condescending attitude of the Greek center towards the historically and emotionally charged region of Cyprus, as well as with the premature attempts of literary presentation of a qualitatively heterogeneous, unequal, and fluid material. In general, it is a critical stance that disagrees with any form of conscious or unconscious marginalization of one of the most organic and dynamic areas of modern Greek literature.
