Description

The texts presented in this edition come from the 5th volume of "Theory Culture & Society", which is dedicated to postmodernism.

Douglas Kellner's text ("Postmodernism as Social Theory"), written in the aftermath of the major debate on postmodernism, provides a useful introduction to the subject. The author offers a lengthy overview of the phenomenon, starting with its French expressions (Baudrillard, Lyotard) and ending with a critique of Habermas' critique of postmodernism from the perspective of the Frankfurt School, as well as a more positive treatment of Fredric Jameson's Marxist interpretation of postmodernism as the "cultural logic of capitalism."

In the second essay, Zygmunt Bauman raises a series of thoughts with the question mark in its title ("Is There a Postmodern Sociology?") that lead to a more precise definition of "postmodernity" within the bubble of inflationary "post-" that flooded the space of theory after the announcement of the (constantly postponed) "end of history."

The third essay ("Beyond Progress: Museum and Montage" by David Roberts) articulates, through a dialectical conjunction of Malraux and Benjamin, a defense of the art of the past from an unexpected "postmodern" perspective.
