Description
Vasilis Vasilikos receives in 1971 in Paris, where he was in self-exile since 1967, an established folder from his father, Nikos: "It was the diary that you will soon read, reader. My father, I remembered, had mentioned it a couple of times. That he had kept a diary from the Asia Minor Campaign... And now I held it in my hands, in a leather-bound rectangular album, handwritten, clean, copied from his notes on the front... Influenced by my father's diary, I started studying the proceedings of the Trial of the Six that he had given me two years earlier, in Geneva, by Alekos Levendis... The proceedings of that complex trial that ended in the execution of the six who were considered responsible for the Asia Minor Catastrophe were in a volume of about 700 pages... I immersed myself in reading the proceedings, and then the idea of a work was born in me, which, summarizing the essence of the trial, without additions or changes, would be played out by a peculiar theatricality".
(from the book's Prologue)
The "Diary of the Asia Minor Campaign" (1918-1922) - a personal testimony of the war conflicts and the tragic conclusion of the front's collapse, written by the father - offers valuable information as a historical source and records, with concise and direct language, narrative skill and stunning descriptions, the sufferings of a young twenty-two-year-old who experiences the nightmare of the war that will result in the national disaster of 1922.
The "Trial of the Eight" - based on the stenographic proceedings of the newspaper "Proia" and edited by the son - presents, in the concise manner of a peculiar theatrical work, one of the most dramatic episodes of the National Division: the trial of the eight considered responsible for the Catastrophe before a military court (October 31-November 15, 1922).
