Description

Major work of Kostas Axelos, "The Game of the World" was first published in France in 1969 by the pioneering publishing house Editions de Minuit and was reissued in January 2018 by Editions Les Belles Lettres, collection "encre-marine". Untranslated until now in Greece, it is part of the trilogy "The Unraveling of the Game", along with the books "Contribution to Logic" (1977) and "Towards Planetary Thought" (1964, Greek translation by the Publishing House of Estia, 1985).

"Entering the game of the world, man enters a game that exists before him and that brings him, which he himself can change with his own contribution, but cannot control," writes Axelos. This game is played through the great powers that connect man with the world, and these are - in the course of human history - myths and religion, poetry and art, politics, philosophy, sciences and techniques. And these again are mobilized by the elemental forces: language and thought, work and struggle, love and death, as well as by the game of man who is himself a player, a plaything and a deceived one.

Spinal, written in excerpts, this book offers multiple readings and, despite its unquestionable philosophical structure and its speculative depth, it is also addressed to a wide circle of readers. Issues that concern today's reality, such as the dominance of technology, the crisis of ideologies and politics in our planetary era, globalization, alienation and the "transformation" of man in the world, the God-problem and the nature-problem, the question of poetry and art and the kingdom of the image, modern nihilism, are addressed here with the known insight of the thinker that makes this book amazingly timely, to which the French newspaper Le Monde had dedicated a two-page article when it was first published.
