Description

This book is an original research that engages in a conversation between the sociology of genetics, critical criminology, and the sociology of death. It inaugurates an interdisciplinary dialogue regarding genetics as a system of knowledge-power in cases where socially deviant behaviors are constructed as genetic reality in genetic laboratories and courtrooms. What truth does the gene narrate when it is called to testify about the perpetrator, the victim, living or dead individuals attributed with sexually or socially deviant behaviors? How do transitions occur from the surveillance system of social subjects to the surveillance of genes? How are deviant individuals constructed as deviant genes, and ultimately as "potential criminal genes"? In addition to its well-informed theoretical background, a particular achievement of the book lies in the empirical research conducted by the author. Through vivid sociological narration, the pages of the book guide us through the genetic laboratories and courtrooms of Greece, where geneticists produce scientific knowledge and are called upon to present it as expert witnesses.

Sevasti Troumpeta, Professor at the "Childhood and Difference (Diversity Studies)" Chair, University of Applied Sciences, Magdeburg-Stendal.
