Description

In her book, Djamila Zon deals with the so-called "dark pages" of post-war Greece, with the ultimate goal of serving as a warning for future generations, especially now, considering the current developments in the country.

The author studies the ideology of the Colonels from 1967 - and especially after 1970 - as expressed in the school book "Civic Education". This book, along with propaganda through cinema and printed material, reflects the fascist-oriented mentality of the junta regime. A mentality fueled by a very specific economic, political, etc., substratum.

The subject is examined comprehensively, shedding light on all aspects of the specific situation. The events preceding the junta are described, the three strongmen of the military dictatorship are presented, the civic education promoted by the new regime and the revolutionary profile it projected. Communism is presented as accountable for the chaos and corruption in "sick Greece", thus emphasizing the "salvific" role of the dictators. The study concludes with references to the symbols used to imprint the national identity and sovereignty of the junta, the role of the Church, and the events in Cyprus, while there is also a separate chapter with photographic material.
The research was based on personal interviews and oral testimonies that the author herself gathered during her stay in Greece. Additionally, studies by C. M. Woodhouse, C. T. Aris, Kenneth Young, Eric Hobsbawm, Ernest Gellner, Robert Paxton, and others were used.
