The book by E. Zachos - Papazachariou "In Exarcheia in the '80s" is the chronicle of a transitional era. In the historic neighborhood of Athens, in the early 1980s, students, intellectuals, artists, new rebetika musicians, unemployed people, and ruffians meet, fall in love, create collectives, but mainly discuss, endlessly discuss, about all topics: politics, creation, relationships between the sexes, popular culture, the relationship between Hellenism and the West, religion, science, criticism. With characters that are truly slightly altered or completely invented, with an unaffected language that is not afraid to resort to slang when the narrative requires it, with multi-layered humor that ranges from subtle self-mockery to crude pranks, Zachos' book is a rich Athenian chronicle and at the same time, as noted in the epilogue by the author Dimitris Fyssas, a "semi-historiography": a swift sketch of Greek history through the eyes of the irresistible central character, Aspromallis.
