A sudden, unexpected rain cancels Athena's excursion plans, shaking her trust in weather forecasts. Mr. Archimedes, her neighbor and a mathematics professor at the university, takes on the task of explaining to her the difficulties in weather prediction by placing climate in a broader category of phenomena known as chaotic. Thus begins a series of meetings during which the young student delves into the secrets of complexity, a relatively new field that combines mathematics with the physical and social sciences in an effort to interpret phenomena that traditional wisdom struggles to explore. Through conversations with the elderly professor, Athena and her friends will come into contact with concepts such as self-similarity, fractals, fractal dimensions, strange attractors, and they will understand how all these are involved in the functioning of our bodies, the growth of plants, the formation of coastlines, and the shape of clouds. They will discover that exotic names like the Mandelbrot set, the snowflake von Koch, the Hilbert curve, and the dust of Cantor represent not only shapes of unparalleled aesthetics but also relate to image compression, propagation, and enhancement, the creation of cinematic effects, and even the prevention of serious illnesses.
