Description

The hero of Bernanos, a priest in a small village in France, is the image of humility, sacrifice, and suffering. A victim of his naivety and weak character, seriously ill - his illness will soon lead him to death - he almost never manages to do what is right, despite his fervent zeal and intensity of his faith. The germ of despair that infects him makes him fear losing this faith. Moreover, he is threatened by powerful enemies: the cynicism of the aristocracy, the immorality of a young woman, his absolute poverty. The only thing the young priest can oppose to all this is his genuine love and his hope in the grace of God.

"The Diary of a Country Priest" has been translated and published in twenty-seven countries, honored in 1936 with the Grand Prize for Fiction of the French Academy, and ranks among the most important works of French literature of the 20th century. It has been masterfully adapted for the cinema by Robert Bresson.

The Greek edition is accompanied by an introduction, a detailed chronology, and extensive notes from the Pleiade edition, and an epilogue by Stavros Zouboulakis.

"This pure-blooded writer is worthy of the respect and gratitude of all free people."
Albert Camus

"The great gift of Bernanos is that he makes the supernatural natural."
Francois Mauriac

"This novel is Bernanos' masterpiece, a stunning book."
Gabriel Marcel
