Accompanying edition of the exhibition organized by the French School of Athens at the Benaki Museum (138 Pireos Street) dedicated to Athens in 1917, with rare visual material from the photographic service of the Allied military corps, which operated in the Balkans during World War I and is known as the "Army of the East".
Exactly one hundred years ago today, during 1917, French photographers and cinematographers of the "Army of the East" took hundreds of shots of Athens. These are rare aspects and images of the city, which have been forgotten or lost over time. It is the first time that this exceptionally rich visual archive of the city's everyday life, monuments, streets, and corners is presented.
The exhibition sees Athens in 1917 through the eyes and quests of these foreign soldiers and seeks to identify and highlight the points that interested them and served as a major source of inspiration.

This is an excellent edition that preserves the image of an Athens that has almost been lost forever.
