Description

Nikos Kurachanis' book focuses on social housing policies in Greece. At a time when there are indications of a multiplication of homelessness in Greek society during the years of the crisis, the interventions that are being developed do not fulfill what Social Policy promises at an academic, ethical, and value level. On the contrary, amidst the pressures of austerity policies and cuts to the social protection system, they rely on assisting in preventing the death of the homeless.

The logic that is being formed can be summarized as follows: "a little help from NGOs, a little effort from the homeless, and they won't die." A residual emergency model seems to be established as the dominant social prescription for social problems. A model in which homelessness is approached with a managerial philosophy aiming to alleviate the most extreme and publicly visible symptoms.
