Jeor Mormont wants to promote someone who can improve the infrastructure of the Gift, the rich and developed area south of the Wall that was granted to the Brotherhood of the Watch by the Starks thousands of years ago. Surviving the unforgiving landscape of the North poses many challenges, but whoever takes on this duty must also defend the Wall against the Wildlings' attack, as they try to find a way into Westeros.
