Description
In "The General of the Dead Army," the stay in Albania of two Italians, a military officer and a priest, is narrated. They go 15 years after the end of World War II to find and unearth the bones of the killed Italian soldiers. The two men, presented at the "Dajti" hotel in Tirana, represent both the military and the religious perception of the world.
So, a military officer and a priest, with their sensitive and fragile relationship as well as their caustic dialogues about the Albanians, seen from the perspective of foreigners, give the text a unique and distinct atmosphere... Some other episodes take place in a city in southern Albania (Argyrokastron) and the brothel that existed there during the war.
In the labyrinth that the general wanders in search of his petrified army, the reader is confronted with a multitude of other literary compartments, which can be perceived as autonomous narratives. The scene of the wedding is chilling, when the general, feeling momentary euphoria, forgets that he represents the former conquerors and comes to believe that he has identified with the locals: an old woman throws at his feet the sack with the bones of a "cursed" Italian colonel, who wanders like a ghost from the first pages of the book.
