Description
Almost no one wants to be called Balkan anymore. No country in the region responds to Athens' calls for the formation of a "Balkan front" within the EU and NATO.
Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia claim to belong to Central Europe. The same goes for Romania. Additionally, Romania and Bulgaria are becoming launching pads for Washington's conquests in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. They are acquiring numerous American bases and becoming a threat to Russia. Tirana sees Kosovo's independence as a decisive step towards the revival of the "Greater Albania," which existed during fascist occupation. As if all this were not enough, Turkish influence in the Balkans is rapidly growing, favored by the new conditions.
What is Greece doing in this "political minefield" of the 21st century Balkans? How is it resisting and forging alliances? Should it veto the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to NATO and the EU or not? Will the Greek people be allowed to decide through a referendum whether they want Turkey to join the EU or not? Is the "Greater Albania" a threat to Greece or not?
Giorgos Delastik's book sheds light on the current Balkan reality and places the problems faced by Greek foreign policy within the international context.
