Description

Censorship exists. Islands of traditional forms of suppression of freedom of art, expression or the press by public authorities still survive today. However, what characterizes the contemporary situation more than ever is the less visible but sometimes more drastic versions of self-restraint of human speech, in the name of diverse expediencies. The texts of the book deal with both of these versions, presenting an interdisciplinary combination of experiential and analytical discourse and documenting the relevance and importance of the problem of censorship with reference to the acts of artistic censorship in Greece, from 1945 until today.

Specifically, the volume is structured into four sections:
- "Experiencing censorship", with texts by: L. Karabini, G. Zioga, M. Tziandi, T. Kostopoulos, and N. Valaoritis
- "Censorship and rights", with texts by: D. Christopoulos, G. Theodosi, S. Tsakyraki, X.D. Argyropoulos, A.X. Taki, and D. Dimouli
- "Antinomies of freedom/censorship", with texts by: G. Stavrakaki, N.A. Sevastaki, A. Athanasiou, N. Panagiotopoulos, and Th. Lipovats
- "Acts of Greek artistic censorship", edited and commented by G. Zioga

The reluctance of parts of Greek society and the state to familiarize themselves with or even tolerate what they morally or politically reject has kept the relevant public dialogue on the margins for years. It is therefore not surprising that, although there have been occasional approaches and research initiatives, the broader promotion of the issue has not been achieved so far, based on a combination of artistic demand and research perspective. This volume, a carrier of testimonies as well as various research approaches, attempts to overturn this image and to be a constant challenge for reflection.
