"It is almost certain that things did not happen as it appeared they did. But how did they happen?";
Yannis Maris

The murder of Polk, the infamous "Polk case," remains one of the darkest post-war crimes for sixty-eight years. The official view, validated by a court decision, has not only been challenged but proven to be full of holes. A "decision" of political expediency. The interpretations of the motives behind the murder and the assumptions about the perpetrators, made from various sides, are more or less persuasive and "logical."
In February 1977, Yannis Maris, prompted by Gregoris Staktopoulos' request for a retrial, published a comprehensive investigation in "Akropolis" in installments about the "Polk case," an investigation that he had started in 1948 and had just completed. This investigation provided a different "perspective" on the mystery of George Polk's murder. It delved deeper into the mystery that had shocked Greece at the time and caused a stir in Europe and America.
Maris found new evidence and, with his ability to delve into complex mysteries, shed some light on what seemed incomprehensible at the time. The top author of detective novels could have wonderfully turned this whole story into a novel with a detective and espionage mystery. He never did. It was perhaps the only time that Maris did not construct a mystery story but experienced it himself.

Georgos Leontaritis participated as an assistant in Maris' investigation in 1977. He conducted original interviews and recorded testimonies, which he presents in this book. Staktopoulos broke his silence and spoke about his tragedy. K. Hatziargyris, a journalist and Polk's assistant, said a lot. And later, Markos Vafeiadis, the leader of the Democratic Army of Greece, whom in 1948 all foreign correspondents of major newspapers sought to approach in Grammos, spoke openly, without any reservation.
