In this section, we will upload favorite food choices and how we can make them healthier, so that we can incorporate them into our diet plan.
This does not mean that we are forbidden to consume some foods that we like, but sometimes depending on our goal (e.g. weight loss), we may need to adjust our choices.
Let's start with everyone's favorite souvlaki!
If you are on a diet and do not want to deprive yourself, you can incorporate it into your diet with some healthier variations:
- Instead of white pita bread, choose whole wheat pita and ask for it to be unleavened. Whole wheat pita contains better quality carbohydrates and if it is unleavened, the caloric content will be reduced immediately by at least 136 calories.
- Instead of pork, choose chicken breast skewers. Chicken breast is a source of lean protein and does not contain saturated fats like pork.
- Instead of fried potatoes, choose cabbage/carrot, lettuce/tomato, or grilled vegetables. This way you will greatly reduce the caloric content of the meal and make it more satisfying.
- Instead of mayonnaise-based sauce, choose mustard. Mayonnaise and sauces based on mayonnaise have about 90 calories per serving. Mustard is a good choice as it has minimal calories. Another good option is tzatziki, which contains about half the calories per serving compared to sauces.
